Sometime Later

I walked alone
Through the heart of the city
And surrounded by people,
I found my way out
Trying so hard,
Keeping feet on the pavement
Looking for consolation
Behind every doubt
And I'll decide it
When I've been here a while
I'll be better
In a couple of years
When the thoughts hurting now have departed
I walked alone,
Through the trouble I started
And the city compounds it
And tears at my clothes
I just need some time
'Cause I'm still far from perfect,
But someday when I get there,
I'll come right back home
And I'll decide it
When I've been here a while
I'll be better
In a couple of years
When the thoughts hurting now have departed

Oh, Buddy
02:16

It was always a Wednesday thing
And it wasn't something we ever spoke about much
Night time would fall and so too would our inhibitions,
Governing what men should be up to in the middle of the work week
And maybe it was the physical contact--
Maybe somewhere along the way, we decided we needed it
Twisting,
And Bending--
Flesh against wet flesh and linoleum
Well, it wasn't how things started,
But it's where we ended up
And Tim Dillinger--he used to say, "Beware the man with nothing to lose"
But I never knew who he was talking about
We all had something to lose,
Even Summer Sam, and he'd started this whole mess
But it was a lot of that--
Loose talk, loose limbs, and a loose way for us to be living
Not that it was ever meant to last
And of course, it didn't
Years later, I ran into Tim
He'd been in touch with some of the guys
Summer Sam had died a few years back
Nobody'd bothered to tell me
Tim noticed my hand twitch--same as it used to
A small, involuntary reminder
That it was Wednesday again
I had never had managed to shake the convulsions
He asked me, "how do you feel?"
And I said, "Oh, buddy"

A lady fell into my pocket
And I wanted to make everything
So perfect
In her, I was often
Caught up in an old fantasy
But it's always the same
When I'm coming back down--
Try to own it--a moment for me
Some pleasures I'll take
Baby, that's all I need
'Cause everything's better this way
Night after night, I've been thinking
And I'm looking for someone to blame
For the hole in my chest that's been sinking
Maybe everything's better this way
But it's always the same
When I'm coming back down--
Try to own it--a moment for me
Some pleasures I'll take
Baby, that's all I need
'Cause everything's better this way

The Garbage Man
05:00
|

I guess there's not so much to say
Seems like a light one
Maybe I'll go home
It's just some news and bills to pay
Some coffee filters--
Some paper towel rolls
And in the driveway, I can see
The same old car you had on Monday
You sure are home a lot this week
And I don't know who you think you're fooling
'Cause I will wait forever
When we are together--
No conditions or restraining orders
I'll be glad to see it--
History repeated,
Just in time for me to make it up to you
And when the day turns into night,
I'm crouched behind a row of bushes
And by the dim of window light,
I feel the heat I had forgotten
'Cause I will wait forever
When we are together--
No conditions or restraining orders
I'll be glad to see it--
History repeated,
Just in time for me to make it up to you

Inside of Your Heart
03:30
|
|||
Inside of your heart
I don't think I'll stay
I think you'll forget
When I go away
Inside of your heart
Things happen so fast
I knew from the start
That this wouldn't last
Inside of your heart
There isn't much room
I thought I was done now
Competing with you
Inside of your heart
I thought there was time
For me to be yours and
For you to be mine
Maybe you don't know it like I do
Maybe you're happy
And trying to cling to
The things that you know
The things you can see
I thought for a while
You'd make room for me
Inside of your heart
There's nothing but trash
All smashed into corners
Like pieces of glass
Inside of your heart
I don't think I'll stay
You'll fill it with someone
When I go away
Maybe you don't know it like I do
Maybe you're happy
And trying to cling to
The things that you know
The things you can see
I thought for a while
You'd make room for me

Stuck in an Argument

|

Stuck in an argument
Throwing up endless sentences
And meaningless divides
On each side is you and me
And nothing else

Is it real cold on the moon?
Are you coming back home to me soon?
And when you plunge
Back in the ocean
Will you still be the same?
Is there still blue in your eyes?
Did it pass when you burst through the sky?
With darkness around you,
Do you feel it on you,
Tugging at your neck?
While you're up there spinning around,
With no feet on the ground,
Through emptiness stealing your breath,
Do you think of me?
Is it too quiet tonight?
Can you recreate voices alright?
Do they rattle you
And chill you too?
Do they drag you back down from up high?
Do bad moments pull you apart?
Or is the mission so close to your heart
That you hold a screen
To everything
And everyone behind your mark?
Are you keeping logs every day?
Are you writing the darkness away?
Is your laughter so cheap-
And your longing too deep
To let simple thoughts stand in your way?
While you're up there, spinning around
With no feet on the ground
Through emptiness stealing your breath
Do you think of me?
